Urgent vs. Emergency Conditions in Pets: What’s the Difference?

Understanding the difference between an urgent and an emergency situation can help you act quickly and confidently when your pet isn’t feeling well.

Urgent care needs are typically non-life-threatening but still require prompt attention, such as:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea (without severe lethargy)

  • Limping or minor injuries

  • Ear or eye infections

  • Allergic reactions (like hives or swelling)

  • Minor wounds or lacerations

  • Frequent urination of small or large amounts

Emergency care involves immediate, life-saving treatment. These situations include:

  • Trouble breathing or collapse

  • Seizures

  • Uncontrolled bleeding

  • Severe trauma (e.g., hit by a car)

  • Inability to stand or sudden paralysis

  • Bloating or swollen abdomen

  • Difficulty urinating with distress or vocalizing

When in doubt, always call us. We’ll help determine the next best step for your pet.
